Bitcoin Back Above 250,000 THB, What Next?

Bitcoin is back in the news as prices have more than doubled so far this year. While many had written cryptocurrencies off as being dead in the water, Bitcoin has rewarded those that stuck with it. The question on everyone’s mind is why?

Satoshi

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Bitcoin, here’s a quick background. Bitcoin was created by someone that went by the name Satoshi Nakamoto. No one knows who that person really is. Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency without a central bank or single administrator that can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries. Satoshi came up with the concept as a result of the 2008 financial crisis and global central banks printing money. Each Bitcoin is created through mining and there will only ever be 21,000,000 Bitcoins created.

Consensus Week

No one knows for sure the exact reason why Bitcoin has gone up this year. One of the theories surrounds Consensus Week in New York City. Consensus is the crypto industry’s top conference and it is held each year. Historically, there has been a run up prior to this conference as rumors surrounding mainstream adoption get thrown about. This year’s conference started on May 13, which is when Bitcoin blasted through the US$ 8,000 barrier.

200-Day Moving Average

Bitcoin is now trading above its 200-day moving average. The 200-day moving average is the most important moving average as it signals the long-term trend. Above the 200-day is bullish and below is bearish. By crossing the 200-day, many expect Bitcoin to continue climbing and that is bringing in new buying.

Bullish Calls

Analysts from investment bank Canaccord Genuity said they expect Bitcoin to rally hard over the next 24 months, potentially returning to its late 2017 highs due to next year's halving event, where the number of bitcoins awarded to miners will be cut by 50%.

Stock Market Selloff

Many are also speculating that the US-China trade war has caused investors to look for safe havens. The theory is investors sold stocks and bought Bitcoin as Bitcoin is isolated from tariffs.

Whales

While all of the prior explanations make sense and make for you good news copy, none of them are true. Bitcoin is a manipulated market. Large holders of Bitcoin are able to move prices with large buy or sell orders and crush retail investors. With so many investors trading on margin at exchanges like BitMex where 100 to 1 leverage is offered, it’s too easy for whales to move the markets and make money by playing both sides of the market.

Bitcoin is now rising because of short covering and the whales are not selling. At some point, they will sell and the price will come down. That’s why Bitcoin buyers should be aware and only invest what one can afford to lose. Bitcoin is not a stable store of value. Caution is indeed warranted.
